Gran Fondo Campagnolo Roma 2016

7th to 10th October 2016

Now in its 5th year, the 2016 Gran Fondo Campagnolo Roma will take place on Sunday 9 October and will close the 2016 Gran Fondo season for thousands of amateur cyclists, both from Italy and abroad. The Granfondo Campagnolo Roma offers an innovative formula that is very popular because it brings together enthusiasts of all types of cycling and of all ages, in the absolutely fantastic setting that is Rome.

The Colosseum, Circus Maximus and the Vatican are just some of the names that spring to mind when talking about this city that has influenced life throughout Europe and the world. The traditional starting point of the Gran Fondo Roma is right by the Colosseum, what better inspiration for a days cycling could you want? From here you will head out of the centre of Rome, into the countryside of the region of Lazio. En-route there are 4 timed climbing sections, with the highest summit at 746m (Rocca Priora). Once you have tackled the hilly countryside, you head back to Rome, for a glorious finish in the Eternal city.

Included with your travel package:

  • Detailed day by day itinerary with maps and all event information
  • The services of our Sports Tours representative
  • 3 nights hotel accommodation at the 4 star Worldhotel Ripa in Rome
  • Bike stored in your room
  • 3 breakfasts
  • Bike tour with mechanical assistance with ex-pro rider Andrea Tonti on Saturday

There are 2 distances available: the Granfondo at 123 km with 1.970m of climbing, designed for trained riders and the “In Bici ai Castelli Romani” fun cycle, 62 km to Lake Albano, suitable for all fitness levels, e-bikes also accepted.

The main Granfondo route offers a ride steeped in history, starting in the heart of Rome and heading out into the beautiful countryside of the Castelli Romani tackling the climbs of:

  • Rocca di Papa: 7,7km at 4,9% average ascent and maximum gradient of 15%
  • Le Macere: 5,3km at average of 4,8% with maxiumum of 7,5%
  • Rocca Prioria: 6 km at average of 6,3% and maximum of 13%
  • Tuscolo (Monteporzio Catone): 3 km at average of 6,5% with maximum of 8,2%

As always, the main event will be the 120 km Granfondo that will take cyclists from Rome to the Castelli Romani (Roman hill towns) along an improved route but with an even more amazing start. Following the race start at the Colosseum, world icon of the Granfondo Campagnolo Roma, cyclists will go through the historical centre of the city: “The cyclists who come from outside the city and especially foreign cyclists ask for this privilege. – according to Gianluca Santilli, president of the Organising Committee – Rome and the Castelli Romani without traffic are a dream for cyclists and we are delighted to offer them this joy, which we hope will become a regular occurrence one day. This year Granfondo Campagnolo Roma joined the WACE circuit (World Association of Cycling Events), together with other great world capitals like New York, Ride London and Cape Town, and international events such as l’Etape du Tour and Vatternrundan in Sweden. In the saddle of your bike, you can enjoy fantastic experiences, starting from Rome that has no equal from a historical and cultural point of view”.

The Granfondo formula is the same innovative one that was so successful last October. Not only will there be a final classification, but the four timed climbs will also be recorded and prizes awarded. This idea is very popular because it gives riders the chance to put their skills to the test, both on the distance and on the climbs, the top challenge for a cyclist. At the same time, everyone can cycle together and experience a day of festivities around cycling and the bicycle.

Apart from the Granfondo on Sunday 9 October, there will be a number of other events: “in Bici ai Castelli”, open to all cyclists, club members and non, on all types of bicycle; and “L’Imperiale – The Appian Way”, reserved for bikes built before 1987. They will enjoy an exclusive route along the ancient Appian Way. There will also be lots of entertainment for the kids, culture, shows and stands to visit at the expo Village.

Don’t miss out on your chance to cycle through the magnificent streets of Rome on 9 October next!
