Gran Fondo Milan San Remo 2016
3rd to 6th June 2016
The date of the 2016 Gran Fondo Milan Sanremo is Sunday June 5th
The genuine Gran Fondo Milan Sanremo organised by U.C. Sanremo covers 294kms from Milan (Milanofiori) to Sanremo, on the Corso Garibaldi. The Milan San Remo Gran Fondo follows nearly the same route as that undertaken by the professional cyclists during the annual Milan San Remo Spring Classic in March.
In 2015 the event took place in April as the EXPO Milano foced many events to change its dates. In 2014 1100 amateur cyclists from more than 20 different took on the challenge of riding one of the longest single day classic cycling races, the Milan San Remo Gran Fondo. This event will be in its 46th year in 2016. Riders cam from various different countries in 2015 including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia and New Zealand and of course the UK.
Famous cyclists such as Cavendish, Roche and Cancellara have all won this classic and Sports Tours International is offering you the chance to test yourself on this famous cycling route. It is a monster of a Gran Fondo and one, only, for the most hardened of cyclists.

There is no longer Gran Fondo from a distance point of view in the Gran Fondo calendar. The cycling route can only be described as “lumpy”, it is still the ultimate challenge for most cyclo sportive riders and does include the cycling climbs of:
- PASSO DEL TURCHINO 20 km (average 1.8 % – max 6 %)
- CAPO MELE 2.5 km (5.2 % and 6 %)
- CAPO CERVO 2.5 km (4.1 % and 5 %)
- CAPO BERTA 3 km (4.3 % and 8 %)
- CIPRESSA 5.6 km (4,1 % and 7 %)
- POGGIO DI SANREMO 3.7 km (3,5 % and 6 %
All riders will depart from Milan via the Pavese highway and from there you will pass through the plains of Pavia, Casteggio, Voghera, Tortona and Novi Ligure. After reaching Ovada, the first major climb is the Turchino Pass from where you will see the Ligurian Sea. After the Turchino you will get to Voltri onto the Aurelia highway, which has views of the Italian Riviera. From here you take on the Capo Mele and Capo Cervo hills, before tackling the Cipressa and the legendary Poggio of San Remo, before the downhill to the finish line in Corso Garibaldi.
It is worth noting that the Gran Fondo Milan San Remo winner finished in 8 hours 6 minutes, with 144 riders finishing in under 8 hours 30 minutes (an average of 21 miles per hour). The last finisher took nearly 13 hours, so this is both a serious race and a leisurely stroll, depending on your abilities and experience. Those wishing to experience a full-on Italian Road Race should look no further.
After the race, participants can meet at the Convention Centre Palafiori of San Remo for a pasta party and award ceremony.
Planned itinerary for the 2016 event:
Friday June 3rd:
We will collect you and your bike from Milan Malpensa. We will run a minibus shuttle transfer service between the airport and the hotel at 11.00, 15.00 and finally 19.00.
You will be staying at the official race hotel, the Ata Hotel Riapamonti so you can prepare for the race together with riders from all over the world who have come to ride the Gran Fondo Milan Sanremo. The hotel is also convenient for the event's registration and for the start.
Plenty of time is available to assemble bikes and to prepare for the Gran Fondo on Sunday. This evening there is a welcome meeting to get to know each other and the other riders that are staying at our hotel.
The Ripamonti is a 4-star Hotel and Residence in Milan's quiet Parco Sud. It offers comfortable rooms and a free shuttle bus to/from city centre and to/from Abbiategrasso Metro station. Rooms in the Ripamonti Hotel come with free buffet at the restaurant/pizzeria. Pieve Emanuele Station, on the S13 line, is 0.9 miles from the property. From here, central Milan is a 10 minute train ride away.
Saturday June 4th:
Today you have the opportunity to visit Milan for a spot of sight-seeing or shopping and a day off the bike or it's a chance for a gentle ride out into the countryside south of Milan and a stretch on the race route.
Again this evening there will be a buffet style evening party at the hotel, after which an early night is recommended. During dinner our there will be a race briefing on tomorrow's event so you get the most out of it.
Sunday June 5th - Gran Fondo Milan-San Remo
Early breakfast today. We will need to be at the start of the race for 07:00. We will look after your luggage and deliver it to the Hotel in San Remo for you today whilst you are riding.
The first 120kms the race is on and many riders will go at full speed. After hitting the coast the peloton thins out and it is easier to stop and catch a following groupetto than to stop early on and lose the wheel of the main bunch. The wind usually heads inland and is head-on, so staying with the group for as long as possible is a good move to conserve energy. At the finish there is the opportunity to take part in a finish-line party, held in the adjacent convention centre. Alternatively you can make your way directly to our hotel, the 4 star Hotel Londra on Via Roma, just under a kilometre away from the finish area. The hotel is excellently situated and surrounded by local pizza and pasta places. This evening dinner will be served in the hotel.
