Gran Fondo Milan San Remo 2014

6th to 9th June 2014

The Gran Fondo Milan San Remo will be on Sunday the 8th of June. This event is now in its 44th year and covers 294 kms from Milan (Milanofiori) to Sanremo on the Corso Garibaldi. The 2014 Gran Fondo Milan San Remo is an almost identical cycling event to the cycling professional Spring Classic cycling race which will be held in March 2014.

Famous cyclists such as Cavendish, Roche and Cancellara have all won this classic and Sports Tours International is offering you the chance to test yourself on this famous cycling route. It is a monster of a Gran Fondo and one, only, for the most hardened of cyclists.

Enter the 2014 Gran Fondo Milan San Remo now!
There is no longer Gran Fondo from a distance point of view in the Gran Fondo calendar. Although the cycling route can only be described as “lumpy”, it is still the ultimate challenge for most cyclo sportive riders, and does include the cycling climbs of:

PASSO DEL TURCHINO 20 km (average 1.8 % – max 6 %)
CAPO MELE 2.5 km (5.2 % and 6 %)
CAPO CERVO 2.5 km (4.1 % and 5 %)
CAPO BERTA 3 km (4.3 % and 8 %)
CIPRESSA 5.6 km (4,1 % and 7 %)
POGGIO DI SANREMO 3.7 km (3,5 % and 6 %)

It is worth noting that the Milan San Remo winner in 2012 finished in 8 hours 6 minutes, with 144 riders finishing in under 8 hours 30 minutes (an average of 21 miles per hour). The last finisher took nearly 13 hours, so this is both a serious race and a leisurely stroll, depending on your abilities and experience. Those wishing to experience a full-on Italian Road Race should look no further.

Planned itinerary for the 2014 event:

Friday 6th June:
We will collect you and your bike from Milan Malpensa. Our main transfer departs from the airport will be there to start loading passengers at 15h00 and we aim to leave at 15h30 so please book your flight to arrive before 15h00. You should aim to arrive in the morning to facilitate timely transfers at 15h30 to our hotel in Milan.

The hotel H2C Milanofiori is within walking distance from the registration and start venue. This hotel has been booked for you on a Half Board basis. Plenty of time is available to assemble bikes and prepare for the gruelling event on Sunday.

Saturday 7th June:
Today you have the opportunity to visit Milan for a spot of sight-seeing or shopping and a day off the bike or it's a chance for a gentle ride out into the countryside south of Milan and a stretch on the race route.

Dinner at the hotel and an early night is recommended. During dinner our experienced reps will brief you on tomorrow's event so you get the most out of it.

Sunday 8th June: Gran Fondo Milan-San Remo
Early breakfast today. We will need to be at the start of the race for 07:00. We will look after your luggage and deliver it to the Hotel in San Remo for you today whilst youa re riding.

The first 200kms the race is on and many riders will go at full speed. After hitting the coast the peloton thins out and it is easier to stop and catch a following groupetto than to stop early on and lose the wheel of the main bunch. The wind usually heads inland and is head-on, so staying with the group for as long as possible is a good move to conserve energy.

At the finish, you will be met by Sports Tours staff and directed to our 4 star Grand Hotel de Londres, on the Corso Matuzia, two miles back along the sea front. The hotel is excellently situated and surrounded by local pizza and pasta places. The hotel itself has having fantastic dining facilities. At 20:00 we will have a Celebration Dinner in the Hotel.

In 2006 the Sports Tours Team won the Copa Simpatia, a magnificent trophy for a team of International Riders. In 2014 we would hope to do the same, and look forward to our riders accepting the challenge of the event.

Monday 9th June:
Transfers to Nice Airport. You should aim for afternoon or evening flights where possible to allow the transfer time back from Sanremo to Nice. (approximately 40 miles, and 90 minutes). We will leave the hotel at 09h00 so please don't book any flights before 12h00.
