Gran Fondo La Marmotte 2016

3oth June to 4th July 2016

2016 Gran Fondo La Marmotte
Our travel packages to the 2016 Gran Fondo La Marmotte are now available. The date of the 2016 Marmotte is likely to be Saturday the 2nd of July. This has not been officially announced yet.
Book your travel package with guaranteed entry with Sports Tours International.

The Gran Fondo La Marmotte is a classic cyclo sportive event based in the French Alps and an ideal excuse for a French cycling holiday. It is held over a classic cycling Alpine route that rivals the Etape du Tour. Sports Tours International is an Official Tour Operator to La Marmotte.

Due to the closure of the Tunnel du Chambon in between the foot of the Col du Lauteret and the start of the ascent to Alpe d'Huez in Bourg d'Oisans, the route of the 2015 Marmotte was changed to miss the Galibier and include the Croix de Fer. The event is still iconic and arguably even tougher.

We expect that the 'new' Marmotte route will be used again in 2016.

The new route is very similar to the original Marmotte with 170km distance and 5100m of climbing.

Please see below for the new schedule:

  • Start in Bourg d’Oisans (719 m)
  • Col du Glandon (1924m)
  • Lacets de Montvernier (777m)
  • Col du Mollard (1630m)
  • Col de la Croix de Fer (2058 m)
  • Bourg d’Oisans (719m)
  • Alpe d’Huez (1880m)

Important Notice regarding La Marmotte:
Our travel packages for La Marmotte 2016 are either 3 or 4 night packages with our hotels in the centre of Alpe d'Huez which makes it easy for you to register and to get back to the hotel straight after the finish.

We offer a basic package with accommodation only but you can build your package with different options to suit your requirements. All packages include the services of our experienced Sports Tours representatives.

You have the option of adding coach transfers, starting and finishing at Geneva Airport, although you can obviously make your own way to our hotels in Alpe d'Huez as well.

Entry only:
Available at £120 including timing chip. Entry into the Marmotte and the Grimpee (time trial) on the Sunday.

N.B. This entry is also valid for the Trophee d'Oisans which gives you access to a series of events from the end of June in the Alpe d'Huez area. This includes the Marmotte and the Grimpee event on the Sunday.

We have single rooms, rooms with a double bed, twin rooms and triple rooms available here.

Planned itinerary for the 2016 event:

Thursday June 30th - Arrival day
You will arrive at your hotel today or take the option to fly into Geneva Airport and make use of our transport. We will be operating one transfer at 14:00 from the airport to our hotels in Alpe d'Huez and another one at 19:00 (£89 return). It takes around 3 hours to complete the journey to the hotel.

There will be a late meal at the hotel Bruyeres. Hotel Alp Azur is on bed and breakfast only so for the later one we advise you to have a bite to eat on the plane or at Geneva before getting on the coach.

Friday July 1st - Registration day
Registration will be on Thursday between 14.00 and 20.00 and Friday from 10.00 until 20.00. This will be in the Palais des Sports in Alpe d'Huez. There will be plenty of time today to build your bike and make some last minute adjustments if required. Our staff will be on hand to assist you.

This evening there will be race briefings at each individual hotel.

Saturday 2nd July - Gran Fondo La Marmotte 2016
Just like the Etape du Tour, there are rolling road closures, feed stops etc, before finishing in Alpe d'Huez. You will get your own personal time for the event, together with a classification. This is what people riding the Marmotte strive for - will you get a gold, silver or bronze? Our hotels are well situated in Alpe d'Huez, so you wont have too far to go afterwards from the finish. Upon return to your hotel, you can choose to do what you wish, so either relax or celebrate!

The start of La Marmotte is in Bourg d'Oisans so after an early breakfast you ride down to the start before undertaking the 170km of the 2016 Gran Fondo La Marmotte. As it can be chilly on the way down you will want to wear some warm clothes for the descent. We will take the clothes that you use for the descent from you and keep in our vehicle for you and take it back to the hotel.

We will provide additional feed stops near the Col de Croix de Fer plus on the climb up to Alpe d'Huez (liquids and gels only)

Support stations:
We will have a dedicated STI support station. Our station will have food and drink as well as the items that you want to give us to have available for you (and a friendly face and encouragement).

Please note that if you want to get round in a good time, it pays to be as self sufficient as possible and to keep stops quick and efficient.

Day bag service:
You can give us items that you want to have available in the race when you stop at our STI support station so you don't have to carry it all the way with you. You have to use the bag we give to you for this purpose. This could be food, energy drink etc.
Please note that all these items have to be disposable or you need to use them as we can't bring them back

Descent to Bourg d'Oisans:
In the morning it can be chilly on the way down to ths start. We can collect the items you use on the descent from you. We will be located 100m before the roundabout at the bottom of the Alpe d'Huez descent. Please note that we can not be held responsible for the loss of any valuable items so please don't put any valuables in the bags. The bags will be kept and delivered back at night.

Sunday July 3rd - La Grimpee de L'Alpe
Today you will have the additional option of participating in the Grimpee de L'Alpe, a 13km event to get your very own time climbing Alpe d'Huez. Ride your bike down to the start from the hotel and try to set a PB on the timed ascent of the Alpe.

We will be running a transfer today back to Geneva airport for those who are not doing the Grimpee and are on a 3 night package. The bus will leave at 07:00 from Alpe d'Huez so please book flights after 12:00.

Monday July 4th - Departure day
After breakfast, leave the hotels or opt for our transfer back to Geneva Airport, with it leaving at 07:00 and arriving at the airport around 10:00. We advise not to book any flights before 12:00.
