Gran Fondo La Marmotte 2015

2nd to 6th July 2015

The Gran Fondo La Marmotte is a classic cyclo sportive event based in the French Alps and an ideal excuse for a French cycling holiday. It is held over a classic cycling Alpine route that rivals the Etape du Tour. Sports Tours International is an Official Tour Operator to La Marmotte.

The Marmotte 174km Gran Fondo starts in Bourg d’Oisans and climbs the Col de la Croix Fer, Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier before returning to Bourg d’Oisans and finishes up the 21 hairpin bend climb to the ski station of L’Alpe d’Huez. The following day you will have another chance to climb the 21 hairpin bend climb of L’Alpe d’Huez, this time in the Grimpe de L’Alpe, 13km mass participation cycling event from Bourg d’Oisans to the ski station of L’Alpe d’Huez. Each Marmotte rider will be given their personal time.

There's a great article worth reading on the Road Cycling UK about the Top 10 tips for La Marmotte.

Our travel packages for La Marmotte 2015 are either 3 or 4 night packages with our hotels in the centre of Alpe d'Huez which makes it easy for you to register and to get back to the hotel straight after the finish.

We offer a basic package with accommodation only but you can build your package with different options to suit your requirements. All packages include the services of our experienced Sports Tours representatives.

You have the option of adding coach transfers, starting and finishing at Geneva Airport, although you can obviously make your own way to our hotels in Alpe d'Huez as well. We also offer guaranteed entries to this event when booked with a travel package.

Planned itinerary for the 2015 event:

Thursday 2nd July - Arrival day
You will arrive at your hotel today or take the option to fly into Geneva Airport and make use of our transport. We will be operating one transfer at 14:00 from the airport to our hotels in Alpe d'Huez and another one at 19:00 (£89 return). It takes around 3 hours to complete the journey to the hotel.

There will be a late meal at the hotel Beau Soleil, Royal Ours Blanc and Bruyeres. Hotel Alp Azur is on bed and breakfast only so for the later one we advise you to have a bite to eat on the plane or at Geneva before getting on the coach.

Friday 3rd July:
Registration will be on Thursday between 14.00 and 20.00 and Friday from 10.00 until 20.00. This will be in the Palais des Sports in Alpe d'Huez. There will be plenty of time today to build your bike and make some last minute adjustments if required. Our staff will be on hand to assist you.

This evening there will be race briefings at each individual hotel.

Saturday 4th July - Gran Fondo La Marmotte 2015
The start of La Marmotte is in Bourg d'Oisans so after an early breakfast you ride down to the start before undertaking the 174km of the 2015 Gran Fondo La Marmotte. As it can be chilly on the way down you will want to wear some warm clothes for the descent. We will take the clothes that you use for the descent from you and keep in our vehicle for you and take it back to the hotel.

Sunday 5th July - La Grimpee de L'Alpe
Today you will have the additional option of participating in the Grimpee de L'Alpe, a 13km event to get your very own time climbing Alpe d'Huez. Ride your bike down to the start from the hotel and try to set a PB on the timed ascent of the Alpe.

We will be running a transfer today back to Geneva airport for those who are not doing the Grimpee and are on a 3 night package. The bus will leave at 07:00 from Alpe d'Huez so please book flights after 12:00.

Monday 6th July:
After breakfast, leave the hotels or opt for our transfer back to Geneva Airport, with it leaving at 07:00 and arriving at the airport around 10:00. We advise not to book any flights before 12:00.

Useful Information:

Day bag service
You can give us items that you want to have available in the race when you stop at our first STI support station at 1km from the summit of the Col du Galibier so you don't have to carry it all the way with you. You have to use the bag we give to you for this purpose. This could be food, energy drink etc. We will not be able to transport items in between different support stations on the day.
Please note that all these items have to be disposable or you need to use them as we can't bring them back.

Descent to Bourg d'Oisans.
In the morning it can be chilly on the way down to ths start. We can collect the items you use on the descent from you. We will be located 100m before the roundabout at the bottom of the Alpe d'Huez descent. Please note that we can not be held responsible for the loss of any valuable items so please don't put any valuables in the bags. We will not be able to transport items in between different support stations. The bags will be kept and delivered back at night.

Just like the Etape du Tour, there are rolling road closures, feed stops etc, before finishing in Alpe d'Huez. You will get your own personal time for the event, together with a classification. This is what people riding the Marmotte strive for - will you get a gold, silver or bronze? Our hotels are well situated in Alpe d'Huez, so you wont have too far to go afterwards from the finish. Upon return to your hotel, you can choose to do what you wish, so either relax or celebrate!

Massages
Like in 2014, we will have massage therapists available pre- and post event. You can put your name down for this on arrival. The price last year was €20 for 20 minutes and payable locally.Support stations
We will do 2 STI support stations. Our first station will be at 1km from the top of the Galibier and we will have food and drink here as well as the items that you want to give us to have available for you. Our second support station will be on bend 7 on the final climb to Alpe d'Huez. We will have drinks and gels only here (and a friendly face and encouragement).

Please note that if you want to get round in a good time, it pays to be as self sufficient as possible and to keep stops quick and efficient.
