Tour of the Battenkill 2014

4th to 8th April 2014


In April 2014 Sports Tours International are offering you the chance to travel to New York State to ride what is labelled as America’s Queen of the Classics – The Tour of the Battenkill.

The Battenkill is a 65-mile Gran Fondo starting and finishing in the beautiful town of Cambridge, New York State. This unique course follows undulating terrain on a mixture of paved roads and 10 dirt tracks, the latter which make up a quarter of the course.

If you don’t think this Gran Fondo sounds tough enough, then think again! The course takes in almost 5000 feet of climbing with some gradients reaching 18%! There is even the option to ride the Elites course on the Saturday which is 20 miles longer if you hold an international racing licence and fancy a bit more of a challenge!


We will be staying for 3 nights on Bed and Breakfast at the Holiday Inn, Saratoga Springs in New York State, guaranteed entry into the Tour of the Battenkill and an extra night in Manhattan to give you a chance to see the sights of New York City. For those of you bringing your own bikes, you will be able to transport for free with Virgin Atlantic and have the opportunity to ride some of the area surrounding Saratoga Springs which is a haven for cyclists.

There are 2 packages available to book; 1 full package including return flights with Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to JFK with 4 nights’ accommodation on Bed and Breakfast and the other package accommodation only.

If you are booking the accommodation only package, please make note of the transfer times 14.00 4th April from JFK to Saratoga Springs and 15.00 from Manhattan to JFK and advise us of your flights times as soon as possible

Planned itinerary for the 2014 event:

Friday 4th April:
Book your Virgin Atlantic flight through Sports Tours International or arrive into JFK airport yourself where you will be greeted by our Rep and transfers for you and your bike will be organised at 14:00 up to our Hotel, the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs. The transfer should take 3 hours

Saturday 5th April:
Today is a chance for you either to ride or watch the Elite race and register for the Gran Fondo the following day. Make your own way to Cambridge, around 35 minutes by car or a scenic 30 mile cycle through New York State countryside. We have also organised for you to visit the Serrota bike factory in Saratoga Springs who manufacture their own carbon fibre and titanium frame bikes. Meet the bike specialists, learn about the history of Serrota bikes and there is the option to even get a fitting and rent one of the custom made bikes.

Sunday 6th April:
After breakfast we will travel to Cambridge to ride the Gran Fondo. Once completed, soak up the buzzing atmosphere, enjoy a refreshing local beer or two or even try Washington County’s famous Battenkill chocolate milk which is perfect for your recovery! Transfers back to Saratoga Springs are then organised when you will have the rest of the day to yourselves to relax in the mineral baths, visit the famous race course or simply choose one of the many bars or restaurants Saratoga has to offer.

Monday 7th April:
After breakfast we will travel back to New York City for our 4th and final night stay at the Travel Inn in Central Manhattan. Today is a chance to see the incredible sights of the City. Take a trip to the top of the Empire State building or the Rockefeller centre, a ferry trip to see the Statue of Liberty or wander through Central Park.

Tuesday 8th April:
Departure day. Transfers will be organised at 15:00 back to JFK airport for your return flight with Virgin Atlantic back to the UK.

Twin to share:
If you would like to join us as a single traveller but you want to avoid the single supplement then you can make use of our 'twin to share' option. At time of booking we require a non-refundable deposit, plus the full Race Entry Fee, which is non-returnable once booked. The balance of your travel package must be paid, at the latest, 12 weeks before departure to avoid the cancellation of your trip.

Important Information:
PASSPORTS - THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY:
Please note: we will require a copy of your passport along with your application form.

Please – don’t leave it to the last minute. The following information is for United Kingdom passport holders only, other nationals including Eire should consult the appropriate embassy.
UK residents are allowed to enter the USA with a ten year passport, with no less than 6 months left before the expiry of the passport, if staying in the US for less than 90 days.
However, the rules are constantly updated, so we advise that you check your own individual situation as the visa waiver programme is subject to strict criteria, and for example, if you have a criminal record or have previously been refused entry to the US, you may not qualify for entry under the Visa Waiver programme.
Please check your status with the rules.

Passengers are no longer permitted to enter the USA with a non-machine readable passport unless their old style passport has a valid Visa stamp. The newer red passports are machine readable.

IMMIGRATION TO THE USA
There are now very strict guidelines on entry to the USA and a new system put in place whereby you must have registered with the Department of Homeland Security at least three days before you travel. More information can be found on the Department’s Official Website.
