Bordeaux - Paris Cycling Challenge 2014

29th May to 2nd June 2014

New for 2014, you can relive one of cycling's greatest races by taking part in the inaugural Bordeaux-Paris Cycling Challenge.
Travel packages with transport, accommodation, entries and support are now available with Sports Tours International. All riders will have a choice of categories. You can either ride solo or you can pair up with someone else. The ultimate target is to go sub 32 hours but you can take a more relaxed pace and use the full 3 days.

History:
The Bordeaux–Paris was a professional race which used to be part of the professional calendar. It is one of Europe's classic cycle races. This one day/night event was one of the longest professional races and it covered 560km which is about 350 miles. It started in Bordeaux in Southwest France and it finished in the capital Paris some 14 hours later. The event was run as a professional race between 1891 and 1988.

Because the event required special training and clashed with riders' plans to compete in the Vuelta or Giro stage races it lost some of its appeal in the 80s.

The event was first run on 23 May 1891, and the Derby of the Road as it was sometimes called, was notable in that riders were paced - allowed to slipstream - behind tandem or conventional cycles. From 1931, pacing was by motorcycles or small pedal-assisted Dernys. Pacing was also briefly done with cars.

The organisers of the inaugural event, envisaged riders might take a few days, but the first edition was won in a continuous ride by the British rider George Pilkington Mills.

The event:
The object is to cover the 610km with 3500m of ascent either as a solo rider or as part of a relay team. You will be riding day and night though 7 French departments. The route will take you from the pretty villages in the Bordeaux wine region through the Valley de Chevreuse to Paris.

From the famous “Place des Quinconces” in Bordeaux (the largest square in France) to the new National Velodrome in Saint Quentin en Yvelines in Paris.

Ride options:

1. Ultra Raid - Non-stop solo Raid. You will be timed through 5 checkpoints. Your progress will be available to see online for family and friends. Maximum time: 32 hours to cover the 610km (including breaks).
2. Ultra 2 - This timed formula will give you a ranking. Your timing chip will give your time and your 5 lap times. Family or followers will be able to track your progress.
Rider 1 (For the Relay Option): Bordeaux-Martizay: 312 km.
Rider 2 - Martizay – Saint Quentin en Yvelines: 298 km
3. Ultra Rando/Trek - To do alone or with friends. A recovery night can be scheduled half way. You will not receive a ranking. Your timing chip will give your travel time and your five lap times. Family or followers will be able to track your progress online.
