Tenerife Cycling Lunar Tour 2015 & 2016
(See below for dates)
November 2015, February and April 2016
Enjoy a week of cycling in Tenerife riding many of the roads used by top cycling professionals, such as Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Team Sky, to perfect their cycling form in time for major cycling races.
Our Lunar cycling tour in Tenerife, in conjunction with the Delgado brothers, consists of all rides starting and finishing at our base hotel, 2 and 6 hours cycling per day and support on the road. You will also spend a couple of nights at the World Famous El Parador Las Canada's Hotel at 2,300 meters above sea level. Many top professional cyclists have stayed at the parador over the years as part of their altitude training, although one of the best things about staying there is seeing the wonderful sky at night - you will not see another sky like this!!
For this tour, you should be reasonably fit, although the first couple of days help you acclimatise to the island and its conditions. There is as much to learn about climbing as there is to cycling fast downhill. What you learn about cycling in Tenerife is that you count the hours cycling in the saddle, not just the kilometres covered.
We also offer three other tours in Tenerife: the tougher Tenerife Volcano cycling tour a new Women's only Tour, and the new Two Islands Tour.
2015 dates available:
7th - 14th November
2016 dates available:
20th - 27th February
16th - 23rd April
Tenerife cycling routes for the Lunar cycling tour include:
Warming up route - 36km starting and finishing in Garachico and climbing over 500m, passing through the banana plantations and over the coastal cliffs. This is a good introduction to cycling in Tenerife.
Masca - 60km starting from Garachico and heading to the famous town of Masca. It will take 3-4 hours and you will climb over 1,200m. We will take a short break in Masca to recover and enjoy the local views, before we start cycling back.
Kings day route- 5 hours in the saddle from Garachico to the top of Teide and to the Parador. Total elevation gain is around 2,750 meters and the ride is around 65km.......think about it! 2750m in just 65km and really most of the actual climbing takes place over just 47km, which is nearly 6% average!! This is an amazing experience if it is the first time you have seen the wonderful volcanic landscape of the top half of the island of Tenerife, it is an almost extra terrestrial environment. We will stay for the next 2 nights at the Parador Hotel and the chances are you will never have seen a night time sky like you will witness tonight!
Vilaflor - today it's time to undertake one of the favourite cycling pro training rides. Starting from the Parador, we actually ride down the mountain along a fast and windy descent, before turning around at the small town of Vilaflor, which incidentally is the highest town in Spain, and start ascending back to the top. You will not only fight the gradient of the mountain, but also the effects of altitude as you gain height. Sometimes you will pass through the cloud line and the temperature will drop. We expect to cover about 70km and about 2,750m of climbing.
La Laguna - Today we will ride from Parador to a steep finish in La Laguna. Today we will cover a ride distance of 60km and reach an elevation gain of 550m.
Anaga - This is the last route in our program. We'll cross the Forest of Las Mercedes and the Rural Park of Anaga, before we finish the day in La Orotava, in a typical Canarian House where a delicious Paella hosted by the Delgado family will be waiting for is. This is a lumpy day of cycling over 60km and climbing 2,000m.
