Have you ever dreamed of riding a Mountain stage of the La Vuelta?
For the 2008 Vuelta a Espana we have chosen stage 13 from San Vicente Baquera to the famous mountain of El Angliru. It is a classic Mountain stage over a 199km that takes in no less than 5 mountain passes (3rd cat Alto Ortigueiro, 3rd cat Alto de la Faya de los Lobos, 1st cat Alto de Colladiella, 1st cat Alto del Cordal before finishing on top of the famous El Angliru). Unlike many cyclo sportive events, we don’t require a medical and there is no broom wagon chasing you, but you must be in good enough condition to be able to complete this mountainous stage. We will set some timing guidelines and should you fall behind these you will be required to get in the support vehicle. Not only will you watch the Pros complete the same stage the next day, you will also get the chance to see the mountain stage finish to Fuentes de Invierno.
Friday 12th September: Ride the Mountain stage San
Vicente La Baquera to El Angliru 199km Throughout the ride you will be supported by a Sports Tours Cycling Graham Baxter vehicle. After completing the ride we shall travel the short distance (15km) to the city of Oviedo where we shall spend thee next 3 nights on half board basis (Dinner B&B) at a 4* hotel. Saturday 13th September: Watch the Mountain Stage
to El Angliru Our location in Oviedo could not be better for accessing today’s mountainous stage which finishes on the now famous climb of L'Angliru, reputed to be one of the hardest climbs in the world. Although the climb of L'Angliru is only 13km long it has gradients of 23% only 3km from the summit, and the last 7km of the climb don't drop below 16%. Those with bikes will be able to ride from the hotel direct to
the Angliru climb or have an extended ride and complete the final
60km of the stage. Those without bikes will be taken to the base
of the Angliru climb from where they will be able to walk on to the
climb to see the stage. Sunday 14th September: Watch the Mountain stage to
Fuentes de Invierno Once again our location in Oviedo is excellent for accessing the stage. Those with bikes will have the option of starting early and riding the whole 158km stage, or ride direct from Oviedo to the final climb of Fuentes del Invierno, or travel on the bus and ride just the final climb. Those without bikes will be taken to the stage finish at the ski station of Fuentes del Invierno. After seeing the stage we shall return to our hotel in Oviedo. Monday 15th September: We shall leave the hotel in Oviedo and travel the short distance to the coastal town of Cudillero where you will see the stage start prior to boarding the 15.00hrs flight back to London Stansted.
